She walked away when the sports network launched a betting brand, and she says the tough addiction stories never made air

Nicole Noren spent years behind the camera on hard sports investigations. This week she put herself in the frame. She says that for about seven years, stories that looked closely at gambling companies and addiction stopped getting a green light. One show about the topic did air, she told a journalism review, but she felt the final cut was stripped of the harder questions. Noren left in 2023 after the network announced a sports betting partnership. She has a family history of gambling harm that runs through her grandfather, her father and her brother. Her line was blunt: she would not work for a gambling company. The network says its news choices still follow journalistic judgment and that it keeps holding powerful interests to account. Former investigative anchors from that shop have also said deep reporting needs time and support, and that Outside the Lines as a regular show was wound down the same year she left. Sports betting has exploded since the Supreme Court opened the door in 2018. Thirty nine states plus Washington, D.C., now allow some form of it. A recent college poll found that more than a quarter of Americans, and about half of men aged 18 to 49, already have a sportsbook account. That is the same young male audience sports TV courts every night. DraftKings became the network''s official sportsbook and odds partner in 2025, with betting talk woven through live games and studio shows. Harm reduction groups say problem gambling has climbed in states that legalized early, and they are pushing Congress to steer a slice of betting taxes into treatment and research. The Federal Trade Commission is also looking at deceptive sportsbook ads. Noren''s point is that fans now sit through a wall of odds talk with almost no room left for the human cost. Whether newsrooms can still dig into a revenue stream that helps pay the bills is the question she just forced into the open.
