Friday drone wave leaves Ukraine shopping centers in ruins and a million homes dark
The story
Russian strikes on Friday cut a wide path across Ukraine, killing at least eight people and wounding about 60, according to Ukrainian officials. Nine regions were hit. In Kharkiv, a 71 year old woman and a 58 year old man died, and twelve others were hurt across three districts. Two people were killed in Kramatorsk on the Donetsk front, and two more died in Dnipropetrovsk.
Farther west, a drone strike on a food plant in Volyn near the Polish border killed one person and wounded eight. About ten trucks burned after drones hit a customs terminal in Kovel on a main road from Kyiv to Poland. In Rivne, drones struck a large shopping center and other sites, killing one person and wounding seven. Another shopping center was hit in Sumy.
Ukraine's energy ministry said repair crews later restored power to more than a million people who lost it that day. In Volyn alone about 370,000 households went dark, and Lutsk's mayor warned the blackout there could last at least another day. Russia's military chief told President Vladimir Putin the campaign against Ukraine's energy system would continue. UN monitors said September was among the deadliest months for civilians in years, with 328 killed and more than 2,100 wounded.
